He was a gracious and competitive gentleman who stood 6'3" tall. Dan was a good athelete at Southside high School in Elmira. He served in the U.S. Navy following high school, and married his high school sweetheart. His full time employment was as a Pressman at the Elmira Star-Gazette and was a good Union man and Democrat. Dan invested wisely and purchased a cottage on Keuka Lake, Penn Yan, NY for his family. They spent and enjoyed many summers at the lake. Dan and two other friends pooled their investments in realestate and later bought a bar on the southside of Elmira, called initially DAD's Den. Dan later bought out his partners and the bar was renamed Dan's. The bar attracted many of Dan's friends, relatives and area residents. He held annual Yucar tournaments at Dan's, and you could always find Dan playing a game of Scat at the end of the bar with the likes of Henry Hughes, Jim Manning and other patrons. St. Patrick's Day and X-Mas were always special times at Dan's and you could find Alice cooking for all. After some illness, Dan sold Dan's to his daughter, Michelle (Shelly). He showed her the ropes. It was November 4, 1992 on election day, and Dan Manning got dressed-up to celebrate the election of William Jefferson Clinton, a Democrat, as President of the United States. He drove his truck over to check in on his mother, Margaret, at 607 Reynolds St. in Elmira. Dan had a heart attack there in his truck and died at St. Joseph's Hospital. He died at the age of 60.
