Robert Manning
An engineer born in Normandy on the 22nd Oct 1816, but his family came from Wicklow, Ireland. He had a long career in Dublin and Belfast during the latter half of the 1800's. He is famous for hydraulic engineering and in textbooks for the "Manning Coefficient", still in use to describe water flow in open channels given by himself in his paper of December 1889.

More detailed information about Robert Manning can be found on this page.
Most commonly used empirical equation used for open channel flow is Manning's Equation:
v = K/n R2/3 S1/2 (English Units) [SI units]
v = Fluid Velocity (ft/s) or [m/s]
K = 1.486 (English); K = 1.00 [SI]
R = Hydraulic Radius (ft) or [m] = A/Pw
A = Cross-Sectional Area of Flow (ft2) or [m2]
Pw = Wetted Perimeter (ft) or [m]
S = Channel Slope
n = Manning's Roughness Coefficient
The cross-sectional area to flow and wetted perimeter are related to the normal depth (yn) using geometry.

The town of Manning was documented for the first time in 1399. The lovely town of Manning is situated in the northern part of the marvelous Vöcklabruck district. The most remarkable attraction of Manning is, probably, the age-old Bucherhof farmhouse mentioned for the first time in 1449. Its first floor hosts the outstanding Farm Museum boasting a great variety of ancient farming tools, handicraft instruments and things of everyday life on a farm. Some of the exhibits are more than 300 years old and privately owned by Franz Draxl, manager of today’s Mostschenke tavern and organizer of interesting courses.
United States Coast Guard Cutter MANNING
Named after the Honorable Daniel Manning, Secretary of the United States Treasury under President Cleveland. USRC Manning, a 1150-ton cruising cutter, was built at East Boston, Massachusetts, and commissioned on 8th January 1898. Her long career with the Revenue Cutter Service (the U.S. Coast Guard after 1915) was twice interrupted by wartime operations with the Navy. In 1898, during the Spanish-American War, she served off Cuba. She transferred to the Pacific after that, but returned to the Atlantic for World War I, during which she mainly operated in European waters. Manning was stationed at Norfolk, Virginia, during the 1920s. She was decommissioned and sold in 1930.
